This summary is presented to help make you aware of possible financial assistance available to you and your family. You may receive additional information regarding any of these benefits simply by contacting our office. We would be most pleased to speak with you at any time.

Alberta Works - Income Support
Individuals who are receiving assistance from Alberta Works - Income Support will be provided with a basic graveside service and casket as stipulated by the department. Indigent persons and those under the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program may also be eligible for assistance.

Airline Bereavement Fare
Air Canada
Air Canada provides specially reduced "Bereavement Fares" for those who need to fly due to death or imminent death (patients in intensive care, heart attack, final stages of cancer, serious accidents of an immediate family member).

Air Canada's "Bereavement Fares" policy applies to the deceased's spouse (includes common law as well as same sex partners), child (includes step, adopted, grand / great grand), parent (includes step / grand / great grand / in-law / common law in- law), aunt, uncle, niece, nephew (includes those of the spouse and common law spouse), legal guardian (with proof of judgement) and spouse of legal guardian. All above include in-laws of same sex partner.

The proper procedure to apply for this benefit is to forward the Air Canada ticket stub and a Funeral Director's Statement of Death (which is supplied to the family by the funeral home) along with a completed Bereavement Travel Form within 90 days to:

These special priced tickets are offered on our international routes only. Bereavement fares are not offered for travel within Canada and to / from U.S

Offers a "Bereavement Fare" on every flight to those travelling due to a death in their immediate family including spouses, ( married, common law, same sex ) parents, children, siblings, in-laws, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandparent, grandchildren, step relatives and executor of the estate

Canada Pension Plan
In order to apply for these benefits, we suggest that you contact the office listed below to find out what documentation you will be required to bring with you. You should apply for these benefits as soon as possible after the contributor's death. Failure to apply within a year of the date of death will result in lost benefits. Benefits are payable from the month following the contributor's death. If for any reason you are unable to or incapable of applying, your representative may apply for the survivor's pension on your behalf. The office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. An appointment is required. Call the number below and request an appointment for the local Lethbridge office.

Company/Union
If the deceased was currently employed, benefits may be available from the employer or union. Some group plans have the provisions for spouses and dependent children. As well, some benefits may continue after retirement.

Victims of Crime
When a death occurs as the result of a criminal act in Alberta, an application may be made to the Crimes Compensation Board for an allowance toward funeral expenses. After a hearing, the Board reviews the application and makes a decision based on the evidence obtained.

Federal Old Age Security
The Federal Old Age Security Pension is payable for the entire month in which a pensioner dies. The final cheque may be deposited into the deceased's bank account.

The Federal Old Age Security Benefits may be cancelled by telephoning the regional office at 1-800-277-9914. they will expect you to answer the following questions. An appointment is required.

  1. Name of deceased.
  2. Social Insurance Number or O.A.S. number.
  3. Address.
  4. Date of death.
  5. Place of death.
  6. Did the deceased leave a will? If yes, state executor's name and address.
  7. If no will was left, will an application for letters of administration be made?
    If yes, state prospective administrator's name and address.
  8. Next of kin's name, address and relationship to deceased.
  9. Who has paid or undertaken responsibility for funeral expenses and their name, address and relationship to the deceased.
  10. Name, address and Telephone number of the person supplying information.

The pension office also requests that you return the "Identification Card" issued to the deceased. You may do so by mailing it to:

Last Post
Veterans who served with the Allied Armed Forces during World War I, World War II, or the Korean Conflict may apply to Last Post for assistance in the form of a basic funeral service with a specific casket. The total value of the estate must be very minimal and no exceed a certain limit in order to be eligible.

Motor Vehicle Accident
All persons with Alberta insurance have coverage in the event of a death due to a motor vehicle accident. Application must be made to your own insurance company. Funds toward funeral expenses, as well as immediate cash may be available.

Worker's Compensation Board
Specified financial assistance is available from the Board when a work related death occurs. Funds to help with funeral expenses and immediate cash may be available.
