IRA
MACDONALD
1929 - 2008

MR. IRA MACDONALD passed away peacefully on June 30, 2008 at the
Raymond General Hospital. He was a great dad and grandpa and will be
dearly missed by all who knew him.
Ira was born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia on February 7, 1929. He and
his 12 siblings were raised during the great depression. In his
younger years, Ira traveled extensively throughout the world as a
merchant sailor. While in his twenties he worked on many major
construction projects in Western Canada such as the Hart Highway,
the Hudson Hope and Mica Hydro Dams. While employed by the Dominion
Bridge Company, he worked on many bridge installations in the
greater Vancouver area before being transferred to the Mackenzie
Pipeline/ Alaska Highway upgrade project. It was this project that
brought him to Dawson Creek where he first took to the air and
eventually owned and operated the Safari Air Charter Company from
1953 to 1969.
Flying was Ira’s greatest passion; if it had wings on it, he knew
what to do with it and made it look like poetry in motion. Despite
the fact that Ira didn’t receive formal training, he was extremely
knowledgeable and well read in many fields. There’s a saying that
anyone’s life has the makings of a great novel. If mere words could
capture the essence of one’s life, Ira’s would be such a novel.
Ira is survived by his family who would like to express their
heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Raymond General
Hospital (LTC), the Wild Rose and the Green Acres Foundation; you
folks are what make it flow.
At Ira’s request, there will be a private family service at a later
date.
In Lieu of flowers, any who wish to do so may make a donation in
Ira’s name to www.navigators.com
or www.maf.org .

MIKE MURILLO
Juan Miguel (Mike a.k.a. Cisco) Murillo
June 24, 1921 – November 10, 2007

JUAN MIGUEL (MIKE) MURILLO passed away peacefully, surrounded by his
children, at the age of 86 at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital on
Saturday, November 10, 2007.
Mike grew up in Leciņena, Spain, in a family with five siblings. At
the age of six he guarded and shepherded flocks of sheep in return
for food for his family. He spent many nights alone on the mountain
with his dog and herd and learned to overcome fear and life’s
obstacles.
At 24, he met and married Candida Martinez Mayoral, and by the time
his first child was born, he was embroiled in a civil war against
Franco. He was captured and remained in prison for 11 months before
he escaped with others to France where he found work at the iron
foundry. He prepared and executed his plan for the arrival of his
wife and child who were under constant surveillance. They remained
in France for four years during which time his first son was born
and before the promise of a good life in Canada beckoned him. The
family arrived in Quebec City in 1952 where another child was born.
Within 18 months the family had moved to their final destination of
Alberta and completed their family with the birth of two more
children.
Mike worked various jobs supporting his family including working in
the mines until he landed a job with the City of Lethbridge as
sanitation truck driver where he worked for 30 years before enjoying
a long and healthy retirement.
Mike’s biggest passion was fishing with his family and multiple pets
at the cabin they had owned for 40 years and in growing a productive
vegetable garden. He welcomed his friends and acquaintances and his
friendly charm and contagious energy were well known. Mike’s other
talents included making a potent variety of wine, playing a mean
game of canasta, and drinking from an old goat skin that accompanied
him everywhere. If all else failed, Mike would be happy watching the
Toronto Maple Leafs and arguing his political views.
Mike is survived by his five children; Millie, Mike, Marilyn (Bob
Parker), Esther (Cal Schwartz) and Fiel (Mel Visser), Joy (former
daughter-in-law); his four grandchildren, (Selena, Sylvia, Sarah and
Michael) and great grandchild (Elijah).
Mike was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Candida
Martinez Mayoral on June 29, 2007.
A special and heartfelt thank you is extended to the amazing staff
at the Regional Cancer Clinic, Drs. Holland, Hebert and Kozan and
the staff on Level 4C, for the care, compassion and sensitivity
shown to the family and our dear “papa”. We would also like to
acknowledge the excellent service provided by Cornerstone staff.

ELAINE YVONNE MUELLER
1935 - 2007
ELAINE YVONNE MUELLER (nee Oates) passed away quietly surrounded by
her family at the St. Michael’s Health Centre, Palliative Care on
Wednesday, August 22, 2007.
She is survived by her loving husband and partner of 51 years Ed
Mueller, daughters Sherry Mueller-Kerber and Lori Brown both of
Lethbridge, grandchildren; Tia (Steve) Mueller, Brandi Kerber,
Michael Brown and Tony Brown, sisters Margaret Bodell and Brenda
Burke and brothers Don and Gerry (Michelle) Oates.
She was predeceased by her parents Annie Martin (nee Shipston) and
Charles Oates and sisters Dorothy Walkey and Barbara Joss.
Elaine was born on March 9, 1935 in Regina, SK and later moved to
Lethbridge at the age of seven. After school, she worked as a bank
teller and as a store clerk until deciding on a career with Alberta
Government Telephones where she worked as an operator off and on
until retirement in the 1990’s. Elaine was very proud of having
managed a flowers shop for several months to help out a friend and
took great joy in working at the Health Unit for several years. Ed
and Elaine moved around Alberta throughout their marriage due to his
various Royal Canadian Mounted Police postings and Elaine made many
great friends. During that time her skills as a cook were always
improving and her talent as a baker was well appreciated. Elaine
also excelled at many different crafts including cross-stitch,
sewing, ceramics and flower arranging. Other than her family, on
whom she doted, Elaine had a passion for reading, devouring ten or
more books a month.
Elaine will be sorely missed by her family and her friends.
Cremation, no formal service.
There will be an open house in her home at 2908 – 15th Avenue South,
Lethbridge on Friday, August 24, 2007 from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
For those who wish, donations may be made in Elaine’s name to the
