TONY POSTMAN
1937 - 2009

ANTHONY “TONY” POSTMAN, died at the age of 71 years, at The Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, June 29, 2009.
Tony is survived by Pat, his wife of 43 years, a daughter, Carmen (Robert) Bogress of Ladner, BC, a son, Keanan (Glenda) Postman, of Lethbridge, AB, 5 grandchildren, Carley, Jordan and Madison Bogress and Cassidy and Noah Postman.
Tony is also survived by 2 bothers, John W. (Berdena) Postman of Ontario and Leslie (Karen) Postman of Lethbridge, and several nephews and nieces. Tony was predeceased by an infant granddaughter, Eden Grace Postman.
Tony was born on August 11, 1937 in Lethbridge to Herman and Ada Postman of Monarch, AB. He attended elementary school in Monarch, high school in Nobleford and a year of college in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He enjoyed playing the sports of hockey and baseball. He farmed near Nobleford until retirement. Tony and Pat moved from Nobleford to Lethbridge in 1990. Tony’s farming skills were shared voluntarily with farmers in Nicaragua through OXFAM and later he helped Canadian Food Grains Bank by encouraging farmers in southern Alberta to donate grain to C.F.G.B., then helping to distribute the grain to Ethiopia and Sudan.
As a carpenter, Tony used his skills in several volunteer assignments in U.S.A., rebuilding homes destroyed by floods and hurricanes. He was also involved in school projects in Honduras. Tony was a charter member of Habitat for Humanity in Lethbridge and led the building committee for many years until his back pain forced him to stop.
Tony spent several years interacting with young offenders and sharing his faith with them.
Tony enjoyed harmonizing with the Lethbridge Barbershop Chorus, two quartets, and a Mennonite choir that toured Syria and Jordan in 2000.
For the last several years he was a volunteer with the Lethbridge Immigrant Services, and was called the “the living legend” at the office. Many new immigrants bonded with Tony as he delivered groceries, visited, helped them in numerous ways and drank lots of tea.
Tonys greatest joy was his grandchildren. He loved to cuddle them and rock them to sleep when they were young. As the kids got older, grandpa spent hours playing games, going on bike rides, trips to the farm, teaching a carpentry lesson and even sharing a joke or two. Grandpa had a soft knee to sit on, a playful wink, a warm hug and a joyous grin every time he saw his beloved grandchildren.
Tony also enjoyed travelling and eating out, especially with the kids and grandkids.
For those who wish to see Tonys’ earthly remains before he is laid to rest, you are welcome to come to CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME at 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, July 2, 2009 from 8:00-9:00 P.M. BUD PETERSEN
1921 - 2008

NORMAN CHARLES CHRISTIAN (BUD) PETERSEN, beloved husband of Mary Petersen of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the age of 86 years.
He is survived by his wife Mary of 63 years; sons Wayne (Patricia) Petersen of Lethbridge, Rand (Michelle) Petersen and Lonny (Dennice) Petersen, both of Edmonton; grandchildren Kristen Moreau (Mike) and Richard (Carmen) of Edmonton; Scott (Erin) and Ian (Michelle) of Lethbridge; great granddaughter Sophia Moreau of Edmonton; sister Zola Webber, of Mylo; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Bud is predeceased by his father Albert, mother Vyla, and sisters Gloria and Goldia.
Born on the family farm on December 17, 1921 and raised there with his three sisters, Bud followed in his father’s footsteps as a farmer, only interrupting that vocation with a short stint in the Royal Canadian Air Force ending January 21st, 1946. He did not see action as his unit was still in training in St. Thomas, Ontario when World War II ended. During his military years in Lethbridge, Bud met Mary Ethel Kolibar of Lestock, Saskatchewan. They were married on November 16, 1945 in Lethbridge. Wayne, Rand and Lonny came along and were raised on the farm until schooling requirements convinced Bud and Mary to relocate their family to Lethbridge in 1965. Bud pursued his passion for sales, working with Wrentham Farm Supply, Fleming Motors, Modern Farm Equipment, and El Dorado Sales while continuing to farm. By 1974 the commute from Lethbridge to Wrentham and back became too much and the farm was sold. In the spring of 1975 Bud suffered an illness and became disabled. That proved to be a blessing in disguise as it allowed Bud and Mary to retire and spend 20 wonderful winters in Mesa, Arizona. Finally Bud’s health issues ended the Mesa pilgrimage each winter and ultimately encouraged a move from their home in Lethbridge to the Good Samaritan’s Park Meadows Village facility in North Lethbridge in 2007 where Bud resided until his passing.
The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the staff at Good Sam’s North, Dr. Strank, Dr. Janzen and Dr. Myhre, and the staff at the Chinook Regional Hospital for the excellent care provided to Bud during his time with them.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Bud, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, on Thursday, October 16, 2008 from 7:00-8:00 P.M.
A Funeral Service will be held at the MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329-15th Avenue South, Lethbridge on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Cathy Coates officiating. Cremation to follow.

SMOKEY PIERSON
2008

ARTHUR (SMOKEY) PIERSON, beloved husband of Bertha Mary Pierson, of Lethbridge, Alberta, married 56 years, passed away suddenly at the Chinook Regional Hospital, with his family by his side, on Monday, September 29, 2008 at the age of 78 years.
Besides his loving wife, Bertha, Smokey is survived by one sister, Doreen Sherman of Nanaimo, B.C.; Smokey’s two daughters Brenda Mary Pierson (Douglas Beer) and Cheryl Lee Pierson; daughter-in-law Karen Pierson; his grandchildren Breanalee MJ Beer, Kristoffer Maxton Beer, Crystal Lynn (Justin) Smith and their child and great granddaughter Brelyn Leah; Aaron Arthur Pierson (Leanne Smith); and Christine Pierson; Smokey’s 97 year old mother-in-law Josephine Lerohl; sister-in-law Frances (Roy) Kinsey, all of Lethbridge, Alberta, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Smokey was predeceased by his son Brian Arthur Pierson; his parents, Ransom (Dutch) and Mytle Pierson; brothers, Floyd (Marion) Lloyd, Leo (Nellie) Lloyd, Howard (Kathleen) Pierson; sister, Priscilla Lloyd; and father-in-law Christopher Lerohl.
Smokey was born in Lethbridge, AB, and schooled to grade 8 at Galbraith. At age 14 he had to go to work. Smokey welded for Niven Bros., Hunt Welding and Horton Steel of Lethbridge. Smokey worked in the #8 mine as a mechanic and welder. In August 1962 Smokey purchased two Miner Buses and operated the bus lines to the Shaughnessey Mine until it closed down in 1965.
Smokey then built a shop on 13th Street North in Lethbridge, “Smokey’s Husky Service”, selling gas, repairs to vehicles, and welding until 1970. Then he started “Lethbridge Kawasaki Ltd”, selling Kawasaki motorcycles, Harleys, ATV’s, Vanguard boats, and Mercury motors, for 30 years.
During these years he was one of the founders of the “Lethbridge Motorcycle Club” and was honoured with a Lifetime Membership. He and his friends started the first motorcycle hill climbs by the Nolan Bridge, the first flat track in Lethbridge and founded the first cross-country motorcycle race in Southern Alberta, Table Mountain, in 1967. Sometimes flagging on horseback, he made unique courses that grew to be appreciated by hundreds of enthusiastic competitors. Smokey shared his love of motorcycling with his family and friends. He explored, built trails all over the Eastern slopes for hunting and competitions, and just enjoying and inspiring his family to appreciate the great outdoors. You still can see Smokey’s blazes on his trails today for all to enjoy.
For many years, Smokey and his horse Rye, were great competitors in the trailer race at Whoop-Up days. Smokey loved to play hockey and broomball.
For years, geese and big game hunting was enjoyed with his brothers, wife, son, daughters, grandchildren and friends, bagging many a trophy. In 2007, he shot his last whitetail deer right in the eye at 200 yards. Smokey was a season ticket holder of the Lethbridge Broncos (starting in 1974) and an original Hurricane’s shareholder.
But commercial salmon fishing was Smokey’s most fulfilled accomplishment. In 1981 he bought waterfront property on the Port Alberni Canal, B.C. He changed his Hammond ski boat into an aluminum “Commercial A Salmon” fishing boat for netting and trolling. Bertha, Brian, Cheryl and Ken Emmerson were his best deck hands. Smokey, even in his late years, enjoyed jet skiing with his daughters, Brenda and Cheryl, in the Port Alberni Canal, getting close to whales and sea lions and getting lost in the fog.
In his later years, he built his dream house and made a subdivision north of Lethbridge so others could enjoy country living at “Deer View Estates”. Smokey was always working in his garage, and when you stopped by for a visit, you’d be greeted with a cold one and would get to hear an interesting, different story each time, about some adventure long passed.
There will never be another Smokey, he was a unique person who worked hard, played hard and loved hard. Family and friends will always remember Smokey for if they needed help, Smokey was there. He did it his way and he was always enthusiastic.
Thank you for a life-time of being our mentor, teacher, friend and Dad. Someday, we will be together again on that amazing trail you saw. We love you Dad. We will miss you every day.
A private family Memorial Service will be held at Cornerstone Funeral Home.
In memory of Smokey, Memorial Tributes may be made to A.L.S. Society of Alberta 400, 320-23rd Avenue SW, Calgary, Alberta, T2S 0J2; to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 210D – 12 “A” Street North, Lethbridge, AB, T1H 2J1; or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317-10th Street South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 2M7.
