WILLIAM JAY SNOW
04/07/1921 to 02/28/2009

Snow, William Jay, beloved husband of Jessie of Milk River, “slipped
the surly bonds of earth” on February 28, 2009 at the age of 87
years. In the quiet of night Jay received his final call and rode
his last trail.
Jay was born April 07, 1921 in Lethbridge, Alberta and raised in
Raymond until the family moved to Milk River. When WW II was
declared Jay immediately enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force,
where he trained as a pilot and eventually saw service as an air
gunner because of his keen eye and target skills. While based in
England, Jay was posted with the Royal Air Force and saw action in
bombing missions over Europe for four years including support for
both the Dieppe Raid and the Normandy Invasion (D Day). During his
last mission the airplane was crippled, barely making it over the
White Cliffs of Dover. Jay’s back was broken in the crash and he
spent many months recovering in convalescent hospitals after his
return to Canada.
In 1944 Jay met his beloved wife Jessie who was a driver with the
Canadian Red Cross Transport Corp. They were married December 23,
1944 and spent 65 years together ranching on the Bar J 2.
Jay was very active in the community. He served as Chairman of the
School Board, sat on the County Service Board and then was a County
of Warner Councilor for three terms, was a founding member of the
Sunshine Branch of the Canadian Legion in Coutts/Milk River; was an
active member of the local Lions Club, the Cattleman’s Association,
founding co-leader of the Milk River Boy Scouts and Cubs, youth
group leader in the United Church (HI-C), served many years as a
committee member of the United Church Men’s Conference, was an AG
Society member and served on the original Milk River Dam Advisory
Committee. Jay was a member of the Milk River Curling Club and the
Milk River Bowling League.
Besides his loving wife Jessie, Jay is remembered by his children
and their families. Peter (Dawn) and their son Douglas (Darlene).
Barry (Barbara) and their son Benjamin (Diana) and children, Nathan,
Grace, Mackenzie and Michael; Daria (Peter) and Erin (Richard).
Scott (deceased), (Gayle) and their children; Crystal, Serenity,
Buck, Honey, Angel, Carmel and Rabbie. Susan and her children; Ryan
(Tatiana), Shane, Ian (Heather). Jody Low and her children; Sean and
his son Gabriel, Rebecca (Jeremy) and Heather. Janel Martinkowski

their children, Kayla, Aidyn, Evynn. Margaret (Ken) Smith. He is
also survived by his sisters Lillian Brittner, and Paula Pittman and
sister-in-law Grace Snow, as well as his many extended family and
friends.
Jay was predeceased by his son Scott, his son-in-law Kevin, his
brothers Gerald, Willard and George and his sisters June, May and
Melissa.
Jay loved nothing better than to share his love of the ranch with
his family and friends. Jay welcomed all with an open heart,
twinkling eyes, big hugs and great stories. We remember many horse
back or truck excursions over the prairies to look at Indian rings,
cattle and to study the stars. Jay is loved very much and will be
greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at ST. PETER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH,

GORDON

2009

Mr. Gordon Stewart of Monarch, beloved husband of Betty Mae passed

Besides his loving wife of 54 years, he is survived by his three
daughters Laurie (Bob) Hacker of Lethbridge, Barb Stewart (Ron
Poole) of Monarch and Patti Stewart (Peter Marshall) of Edmonton,
and three granddaughters – Emma Hacker, Jillian Hacker and Hope
Stewart-Marshall – all who brought enormous sunshine to his life.
Gordon is also survived by brothers-in-law Doug (Dona) Bannink,
Donald (Marilyn) Bannink, Andy (Louise) Veres and numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Gordon was predeceased by his parents Archibald and Nellie, his
sister and brother-in-law Mary Ellen and Bill MacFarlane,
mother-in-law and father-in-law Everett and Nettie Bannink and
sisters-in-law Jean Veres and Linda Keller.
A life-long resident of the Monarch area, Gordon was a devoted
husband and father, valued neighbor and trusted friend of the
community. He thoroughly enjoyed friends and family gatherings –
rarely missing an opportunity for visiting and reminiscing.
Gordon was the epitome of a man who grew up on the land. Raised on
horses and farming, his knowledge of best practices and conservation
made him known as one of the finest farmers in the area. He remained
active in the farm operation into his mid-70’s.
While always committed to the farm and his cattle, he found great
enjoyment in the early years at country dances featuring big band
music, bowling, curling, hunting and golfing.
After retiring from active work on the farm, one of Gordon’s
greatest pastimes was hopping into his truck and driving the
countryside he knew so well. He also loved every opportunity to try
his hand at fishing or a game of pool at the Monarch school.
One of his proudest personal achievements was his recent receipt of
a 50 year membership jewel from the Diamond City Lodge Masonic
Order.
His gentle spirit, kind heart and miles of patience will be greatly
missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gordon’s memory to the
Alberta Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

at St. Paul School he then went to school in Drumheller, AB. Andrew
was raised by his paternal grandparents Henry and Louise Standing

their new home in Moses Lake. Andrew will be remembered for his
caring and kind disposition to his mother, siblings, nieces and

very important, always making sure her life was a little more easy
to bear. Andrew also saw to it that his siblings were well cared
for. Andrew worked most of his life as a ranch hand and farm
labourer, most of this time in Montana and with Forest Bevans in
Cardston, AB. Andrew was a very quiet individual with very few words
he never had anything negative to say about anyone, and he never
complained about things even right to his death.
Andrew established a very strong bond to his nephews and nieces. He
never hesitated to help them out and he enjoyed their company. All
his little relatives knew where he stashed his change so when in
need of a looney or a tooney they knew where to go. Andrew was a
father figure to all his siblings.

KEVIN BRENT
STANDING ALONE
Born: September 5, 1967
Died: December 10, 2008

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of KEVIN BRENT
STANDING ALONE, our beloved and cherished son, brother, uncle and
great-uncle on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, in Old Agency.
Kevin will be remembered and sadly missed by mom Angeline Standing
Alone; siblings: Andrew, Alphonse (Marilyn), Jeffery (Priscilla),
Andrew (Holly) Bull Calf, Nadine (Thomas), Marion (Rick) and Sandra,
his aunts Florence Red Crow, Bernadette Young Pine, Pauline Tallow,
Deloris Gadbois and RoseMarie Tail Feathers, his uncles Vincent
White Quills, Rod (Audrey) White Quills, and Sidney Young Pine,
stepson Chaz whom he helped raise as his own, and numerous nephews,
nieces, relatives and friends. Immediate family that have gone
before him are his father, Emil Wings; his siblings, Alberta, Alec
and Alvin and brother-in-law Alvin Bad Man.
Kevin was a cowboy. He tried his best to live the cowboy way, but he
did so as a proud Blackfoot. Kevin carried with him the values and
traditional characteristics of a true Blackfoot Indian. He was never
one to speak bad words about anyone. He tried his best not to be
angry with people. He helped raise his nieces and nephews as they
were his first priority when they were around. He would feed them
and make sure they understood what it meant to be neat. Kevin was
fluent in his language and was a source of interpretation for those
wanting to know how to say a certain word, or what it meant.
Kevin was the youngest of the family and his mother Angeline was
always concerned about him. She would feel happy and relieved when
he was visiting one of his family members or relatives. Whenever
Kevin would return from visiting family, he would always end up at
the Calling Last’s home. He enjoyed their company and friendship.
As a young man, Kevin was athletic. He won many trophies and medals
in boxing, cross-country and motocross on his YZ 80 Yamaha. He later
moved into the sport of rodeo in following the footsteps of his past
relatives and his brothers—the Young Pine boys. He was especially
fond of Paul Young Pine whom he regarded as his brother.
As a youngster, Kevin had an opportunity to be a stuntman in the
movie, “Into the West.” He loved his music, his hot foods and
visiting with people in Moses Lake.
His many family, relatives and friends will miss the light that
shined so brightly in their lives. For, when the dust settles gently
in the rodeo arena of life, Kevin will ride bravely and gently into
that great unknown as a proud and humble warrior.
Wake Service will be held at CHIEF MOUNTAIN CHAPEL, Moses Lake, AB
on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 from 4:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M.

Grace came to Canada from Holland in 1952 with her parents and most
of her siblings. As the oldest child of 14 kids, Grace had a lot of
responsibilities and always put others needs ahead of her own. She
was married to Art for 52 years prior to being widowed in 2004. Her
greatest joy was her six children and three grandchildren.
She took on motherhood with passion, dedication, loyalty and most of
all with her sense of humor. She worked tirelessly and without
complaint. Raising a large family on a limited budget was a self
taught skill she mastered. Her children never thought they were
“without” and what Grace lacked in material goods she made up with
her love and devotion. Grace was deeply spiritual; her faith in God
was her strength. Grace had many challenges over her years from
rheumatic fever as a teen, serious car accident, heart attacks and
many other health issues. Her determination to fight to survive
allowed her more time with her kids and for that she was grateful to
the “GOOD LORD”… As she would say Grace believed in giving back to
her community. Her thousands of volunteer hours helped her Church,
serving CWL over 30 years, BINGO’s, Birthright, canvassing for
cancer, Heart and Stroke and so many others… you name it Grace
helped. She was the neighborhood AVON Lady for over 27 years. She
had the gift to “gab” and could turn a total stranger into a friend

LAWRENCE
STRAND
1931 - 2008

The family of LAWRENCE MERVIN STRAND, husband of the late Iris
Strand, are saddened to announce his passing on May 17, 2008 at the
age of 76.
He was cared through his final days by the deep love of his family
and the kind and supportive care of the staff and doctors at the
Raymond Hospital and Long Term Care Unit.
Lorne was born on November 5, 1931 in Preeceville, SK. In 1956 he
married Iris McLean and moved to Lethbridge where he resided until
her passing 4 years ago. Then he moved out to his daughter and
son-in-law's acreage near Raymond and never looked back. He
absolutely loved it there and was so determined he could leave the
hospital and move back to his house as long as his quad was parked
out front so he could get around. Even though his mind was clear and
strong, his heart was just too worn.
Lorne was employed with Canadian Freightways, retiring in 1984. He
had fond memories of when he belonged to A.C.T. and the Rotary Club.
He was Past President and lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of
Eagles. Lorne was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved camping. He
loved his many trips to Reno. Lorne was happiest on his quad or
riding on the John Deere. He’d beam whenever he’d hear Debbie or
Breanne sing.
He leaves a legacy of love, laughter and unbreakable spirit.
He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Strand of Taber and Darlene
(Darren) Urban of Raymond. He also leaves to mourn his
granddaughter, "his little peanut" Breanne Urban of Lethbridge, who
was the love of his life, and her fiancé, Brad Callaghan whom he
loved so very much and considered him as his grandson. He will also
be missed by his dog, Balou.
Lorne is survived by his brothers Ron, John and Jim Strand and his
sister, Linda West as well as numerous sister-in-laws,
brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

away on Friday, April 25, 2008 at the age of 84 years.
She leaves to mourn her children; Mary Ann (Paul) Praskach, Rose
(Tom) Filgas, Frank Sera, Irene (John) Young and Nancy Marr as well
as 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents Bert and
Mary Hanusi, her sisters Betty Hirsche and Margaret Pavan and two
sons John Sera Jr. and James “Jim” Sera.
Priscilla married John Sr. at her father’s homestead in Chin on
August 11, 1942. She and John moved to Toronto but due to the
illness and death of both her parents, returned only a few months
later to take over the Hanusi homestead and raise Betty and
Margaret. Priscilla and John never looked back, raising their family
and increasing the size of their farm. Priscilla was dedicated to
her family and they to her. Through the loving care of her children,
she was fortunate enough to reside at the farm until her passing.
Priscilla was not one to sit idle. Proof of that was found in the
great quantities of home cooked meals and delicious baked goods and
the perfectly manicured yard overflowing with various types of
flowers, shrubs and trees. As her physical health failed, the time
gradually came to be filled with crocheting in her favourite living
room chair.
May her breath now come easy and her “oomf” return.
A private family service was held at Priscilla’s request.

WANDA
SCHOENBRUNN
2008

WANDA SCHOENBRUNN, beloved wife of Hubert Schoenbrunn, passed away
in her home in Coaldale after a long and courageous battle with a
chronic breathing illness in the early morning of Sunday, April 20,
2008 at the age of 76 years.
Wanda (Muttie, Oma, Tante, Schwester) Schoenbrunn is survived by her
devoted family; husband Hubert, sons Chris (April) and Andy (Karen),
granddaughters Lynn (Darren) and Kristin, grandson Dylan, great
granddaughter Gianna, sister Ellie (Gary), brother Walter (Ann),
nieces and nephews; Monica, Sandi (Monti), Angie (Rob), David
(Katie), Tony (Kim), Arnold, Klaus (Jane), Kurt, Volker (Fredrike,
Christiane) and their families.
Wanda was predeceased by her parents Natalie (Bessel) and Heinrich
Ankermann, brother Ervin, parents in law Ruth and Paul, brothers in
law Gerd and Ed, her niece’s daughter Ashley and several special
friends.
Thank you to Wanda’s many acquaintances, neighbours and caregivers
who helped in easing the burden of her illness over the years.
Wanda wanted to be remembered as being ‘self made’, which began out
of necessity as she grew up in the harshness of World War II. An
honest and tireless worker, she easily found employment. From farms
and hotels in Deutschland, to greenhouses and cafes in Medicine Hat
and Coaldale, Wanda was a model of dedication. Employers and
customers alike admired her ability to turn basic fare into superb
meals. Friend or foe, she said what was on her mind, and one was
usually better off by listening. A prolific writer of cards and
letters, Wanda maintained kinships throughout Canada, Europe and the
USA. She enjoyed all kinds of music (never once telling us to turn
it down), was an avid collector of unique dolls, created beautiful
flower gardens, and made intricate handicrafts. Because of Wanda’s
great love for flowers, they would be welcomed at her service or
planted in your garden to remember her by.

CECIL SHERRET
1922 - 2008

CECIL SHERRET passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on
Saturday, March 1, 2008, after a long battle with prostate cancer.
Cecil was born on November 7, 1922 to Andrew and Margaret Sherret on
their farm outside Coalhurst. Cecil was predeceased by his loving
wife Ruth in 2004. He leaves to mourn his sons: Ralph of Calgary,
Andrew of Sydney B.C., his daughter Cheryl LeSergent of Lethbridge
and his son-in-law Fred LeSergent of Williams Lake B.C. Also
mourning his death are Cecil’s brothers James (Joan) and Gordon
(Lorraine) of Cranbrook and his sisters Helen Walkley and Gwen Wills
of Cranbrook and Carol (Norman) Redigger of Preeceville
Saskatchewan; his sisters-in-law Annette Sherret of Edmonton, Lena
Sherret of Cranbrook, Florence (Edgar) Boschee of Medicine Hat,
Violet (Walter) Keim of Carstairs and Erna Straub of Lacombe. Cecil
also leaves to mourn numerous nieces, nephews, friends and
neighbours in Lethbridge and across Canada. Special mention is made
of the Rick and Sharon Sandham family of Kipp, who took Cecil (and
Ruth) into their family, providing many garden plots, some chances
at hands on farming and several children to love as surrogate
grandchildren.
Cecil started off in life as the fourth of eleven children from a
small farm in the Coalhurst area. Because of circumstances within
the family Cecil often took over the running of the farm and every
chance he got would use farm work and harvesting as chances to
escape the confines of the school room to be outside working. In
1940 Cecil moved to Medicine Hat where he met his wife to be, Ruth,
while waiting to enlist in the RCAF. Cecil enlisted in 1942 and
began his 30 year career in the Air Force. Throughout his career he
relied on the organizational and leadership skills he acquired as a
young worker on the family farm.
He was educated and trained by the service, and in turn instructed
and educated many new recruits to the ways of being a top notch
Airman. Cecil was never afraid to explore, learn and share his
knowledge. During his lifetime, Cecil was always very active and if
he wasn’t out gardening, fishing, camping or golfing, he could be
found playing a great game of cards or curling. He enjoyed the
company of others and could always spin an interesting tale.
In his final years Cecil found comfort within the Seventh Day
Adventist church and discovered a wonderful and supportive church
family. Belonging brought him comfort and security within the hand
of the Lord. Cecil will always be remembered as the tall fellow who
stood his ground and took care of those around him.
A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800
Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Friday, March 7, 2008 at
1:00 P.M. with Pastor Olaf Classen officiating.
Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

skiing which they enjoyed for some years.

trips to Hawaii. They took in a farm tour of Europe which took in a
stop to his homeland of Switzerland.
Tony especially loved his music, whether it was a Swiss lullaby or
the sounds of Wilf Carter, Hank Snow or Charlie Pride.
Tony was a true family man. He loved unconditionally his wife,

TADEUSZ SARNA
1949 - 2007

TADEUSZ MAREK SARNA passed away on September 23, 2007 in his home in
the company of his loving family after a courageous battle with
cancer.
Tadeusz is survived by his wife Zofia, daughters Justyna (Tyler Ivie)
and Magdalena (Michael Roman), grandson Oliver Sarna-Ivie, sisters
Alina Nowak and Wanda (Damazy) Przybylinski, brother Antoni (Irena)
Wisniewski, sister-in-law Janina and brother-in-law Zdzislaw
(Barbara) Zawada as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces.
Tadeusz was predeceased by his parents Helena and Stanislaw, his
brothers Henryk and Witold (Krystyna) and parents-in-law Ludwika and
Boleslaw Zawada.
Tadeusz was born on April 20, 1949 in Skowronno, Poland. He grew up
on the family farm learning the merits of hard work at an early age.
As an adult, Tadeusz lived in Zawiercie, Poland with his wife Zofia
and two daughters. His formal training as an electronic technologist
in Poland enabled him to travel to Iraq for a two-year contract
(1984-1986) as well as apply his trade in Poland and in Canada for
the remainder of his life.
Following his return from Iraq, Tadeusz organized a family vacation
to Madrid, Spain, that served as a base for the family’s immigration
effort to Lethbridge, Alberta in 1990. Tadeusz embraced change, hard
work and taking every opportunity.
Tadeusz instilled the importance of education, ambition and hard
work to his two daughters, encouraging and supporting them through
both graduate and medical school. He supported their every endeavour
and guided them in their personal and professional lives. He also
encouraged them to travel, to see new places and experience
different cultures. Tadeusz had a lifelong hobby fixing cars and
machines of all kinds. His attention to detail earned him the
nickname ‘golden hand’ which characterized his approach to his
hobbies and all aspects of his life. He also enjoyed helping his
children with renovations and most recently, building a home for him
and Zofia. Building his home did not end with the house but included
his guidance, love and nurturing his close-knit family. Tadeusz made
many special friends in Poland and in Canada and enjoyed playing
chess, cards and soccer with them. He particularly treasured his
friendship with Stanislaw Mozgala of Lethbridge.
Tadeusz was diagnosed with cancer in December, 2005 and fought an
amazing battle with a devastating disease. He drew inspiration for
this battle from his grandson Oliver
(”dziadzia’s boy”). For Tadeusz, Oliver was a symbol of everything
he lived for and everything he lost. As a husband, father and
dziadzia (grandpa), Tadeusz will be remembered as warm, loving,
intelligent, funny and incredibly selfless. We have lost a
beautiful soul much too soon and he will be forever missed. Our
thoughts and prayers are forever with you.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Oliver Bathe
and Dr. Scot Dowden of Calgary who in addition to their kindness
provided excellent medical care. We also thank Dr. Hunt, Dr.
Kennedy, Dr. Holland and Dr. Ireland from Lethbridge for their care
and expertise as well as the staff at the Lethbridge Cancer Clinic.
Family and friends are invited to a Mass to be held at ST. PATRICK’S
CATHOLIC CHURCH, 318 – 10th Street South, Lethbridge on Wednesday,
