MR. WATARU “WALTER” NISHIDA, beloved husband of the late Miyoko “Miyo” Nishida of Lethbridge, passed away with his family at his side at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, August 30, 2010 at the age of 85 years.

He is survived by his children; Paul of Lethbridge, Terry (Teresa) of Chilliwack, B.C., Michael of Nanton, Maureen of Lethbridge and his grandchildren; Logan and Lauren of Chilliwack, B.C. He is also survived by his brother Eddy Nishida of Lethbridge and sisters Marion Nelson of Edmonton and Katie Kamitomo of Raymond.

Walter was born on January 1, 1925 at Woodfibre, B.C. As a young man he loved to play baseball and practiced Judo. He was sent to an internment camp at Kaslo. B.C. in 1942 and after WWII arrived in Raymond to work on a sugar beet farm.

In early 1950, Walter worked as a painter in Southern Alberta and was the Art Director at CJLH TV in Lethbridge until he opened up Wally Signs in Medicine Hat, AB. While in Medicine Hat he provided for his family and developed his love for golf.

Walter and Miyo were married on August 31, 1957. He moved his family back to Lethbridge in 1978 where he was a partner in A-Plus Signs and later opened up his own business, City Signs, where he worked until he was in his seventies. Walter spent his retirement years golfing, gardening and traveling. He worked hard all of his life to provide for his family.

Walter was a man quick to dance or laugh despite his long struggle with Pemphigoid. He accomplished much in his life, including raising his 5 children, and was a commercial artist for more than 50 years. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

A Private Family Service will be held at a later date.

Steve’s other remaining family includes his brother József Nagy (Mary), sons Joseph Nagy Jr. (Carmen) and Stephen Nagy (Amy), in Georgia. Sister Regös Ilona, son Regös Istvan (Erzsi) and daughter Kohaupt Judith; nieces Molnar Marika, Csordás Kátalin (Hegedüs Szabolcs) and Csordás Gabriella, step-nephew Mánesz József, all of Hungary; step-niece Irene Vetro, of New Jersey; special friend Horvath József of Tiszakarád, Hungary; numerous family in Hungary and many special friends.

Steve was predeceased by his father Nagy József, mother Nagy Ilona, sisters Iren and Olga passed away as infants, sister Mánesz Gizella (brother-in-law Mánesz József ), brother Nagy Tivadar, sister Csordás Katalin (brother-in-law Csordás Lászlo), and in-laws Andrij and Ahafia Synelnyk.

Steve was born July 26, 1935, in Tiszakarád, Hungary, the sixth of eight children. He grew up and attended school in Tiszakarád and later served in the Hungarian Army. During the Hungarian Revolution in November 1956, Steve made the agonizing decision to leave his home and family behind and crossed the border into Austria.

In March 1957 he was issued a Visa allowing him to immigrate to Canada. Steve, speaking only Hungarian, flew from Vienna, arrived in the Montreal Airport in April 1957, then traveled by train to Lethbridge, Alberta. A couple of weeks later, he went

to work in Senate, Saskatchewan, as a Sectionman for Canadian Pacific Railway and in August 1957 Steve was promoted to First Man at Mossleigh, Alberta. He then worked at Brant, Seven Persons and later as Relief Foreman in Burdett, Alberta. Six years later Steve decided to work on the oil rigs traveling as far north as High Level. He soon returned to work in the Taber, Alberta area working as Motor Man and Derrick Man.

On May 23, 1964, Steve married Helen Synelnyk in Lethbridge, where they raised their two daughters Kathleen and Marlene.

In April 1966, Steve purchased his first gravel truck and worked for Tollestrup Construction. In 1975 he leased a gravel pit near the Lethbridge Airport and began working for himself as Steve Nagy Sand and Gravel Ltd. Steve faced many challenges running his own company and became handy at so many things.

In January 1996 Steve and Helen purchased the land where his gravel pit was located. Steve loved starting seedling trees and he planted them everywhere. Even in his retirement, Steve loved spending time at his shop and could be found there most days, except Sunday.

Steve was a proud and dedicated member of the Hungarian Canadian Old Timer Society, the Hungarian Cultural Society of Southern Alberta and the Royal Canadian Legion.
Steve had many interests and hobbies, including dancing, painting, gardening, curling, playing pool, traveling (especially to Las Vegas), socializing with friends at the coffee shop, entertaining friends on his violin, keyboard or accordion, but his greatest love was to be around his family.

Steve lived a very full life and divided his energy and time between family and business. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather (nagypapa). With his shop doors no longer open, his family are reminded how deeply he will be missed.

“Save the last dance for me Sweetie.”

NIEBOER, MARY
1910-2010
MARY POSTMAN NIEBOER departed for her eternal home on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the age of 99 years.

Mary was born in Monarch, AB on October 24, 1910 the youngest of 12 children. She spent her formative years in a pioneer family, homesteading in the Monarch-Nobleford area, and also moved for a time with her parents Jan and Janna Postman to a homestead in the Grande Prairie area. During her limited school years she was a star basketball player.

In 1938 she married Bernard Nieboer and settled into the farming community of Iron Springs. There she raised their 4 children and enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens. She will long be remembered as a hospitable farm hostess; a visitor never went away hungry. With husband Bernard she traveled extensively to Europe and Asia, and in 1992 they retired to Garden View Lodge in Lethbridge. After Bernard’s passing and with health restrictions, she moved in 2008 to the Good Samaritan Park Meadows Cottage where she lived at the time of her passing.

Mary is survived by son Willard (Twylla) Nieboer of Jenison, Michigan; daughter Joyce (Dick) Doumeng of St, Thomas, US Virgin Islands; daughter Elvina Mae (John) Van Roon of Lethbridge; daughter-in-law Carol Nieboer of Edmonton, well as 7 grandchildren and 18 great-granchildren. She is also survived by 3 sisters-in-law; Gertrude Postman, Henrietta Nieboer and Hilda Nieboer.
Mary was predeceased by son Raynold (Butch) Nieboer in 1986 and her husband Bernard in 2002. She outlived her 8 brothers and 3 sisters.

Mary was the oldest living member of the Nobleford Christian Reformed Church.

We rejoice and give thanks to God for having allowed her to share these many years with us. We are all richer for the many things she taught us, the wisdom she shared with us and the good times she provided for us. M

om was a quiet, easily pleased woman who minded her own business and these were useful attributes in her senior lodge life.

Knowing that her Redeemer lives was Mom’s comfort, and is ours also. Mom’s favourite Bible text was John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.”

She loved to sing and one of her favourite songs was:

“Someday the silver cord will break
and I no more as now shall sing
But oh the joy when I shall wake
within the palace of the King
and I shall see Him face to face
And tell the story – saved by grace”

A Graveside service will be held at a later date.
