Beard, Mary

Date of Service: February 24, 2022

MARY BEARD, beloved wife of the late Ralph Beard, passed away peacefully at the Milk River Health Centre, on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at the age of 103 years.

MARY BEARD (Maria Dimitra Kokinos), passed away peacefully at the Milk River Health Centre, at the age of 103 years.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Ralph, parents, James & Edna Red, one sister and two brothers. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Ruth (Loyal Orcutt) and many far-flung nieces and nephews as a very special aunt. She is especially remembered as a second "mother" by all of the Beard nephews who spent summers at the farm.

A longtime resident of Milk River, Mary was involved in the family farm and ranch activities, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Order of the Royal Purple, Milk River Seniors Organization and American Legion Auxiliary Border Unit #73. An avid gardener, she preserved the bounty from her gardens and took pride in her roses. Family, friends and hired men all enjoyed her roast beef dinners and rhubarb pies. There was always room for an extra place at the table. Mary approached life with a strong will and an unmatched determination; always willing to pitch in and lend a hand when needed. Once she learned to drive, there was no stopping her and she drove until her 93rd year. If there was an event or occasion out of town, Mary could always be counted on to drive a carload of friends to wherever it was.

Her interests were varied and wide. She loved cooking, gardening, canning and pickling, reading and crossword puzzles, playing Bingo, pursuing genealogy, raising German Shepherd dogs and playing the piano, especially the music of the Big Band era.

Thank you to Dr. Lewke-Bogle, Dr. Krog and Dr. Ovwasa for all of the care given to Mary. The family also thanks the nurses, HCA's and support staff at MRLTC. The care Mary received was exceptional.

Memorial donations may be made in Mary's name to the Milk River Health Centre, PO Box 90, Milk River, AB, T0K 1M0 or, honouring Mary's love of companion animals, to a local animal rescue society or Humane Society of one's choice.

In accordance with Mary's wishes, no formal service will take place.

The song is ended, but the melody lingers on…
