EUGENE ANDREW UNICK passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 27, 2022. Gene is survived by his cherished wife Alvena and children Melissa, Vaughn and Shawna (Eddy) and their families; as well as in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends. His greatest, most precious treasures were his nine grandchildren whom he was especially proud of.

Gene enjoyed playing hockey, baseball and curling. He was fond of music and dancing. It was hard to keep him away from a family card game where we often heard "chekai chekai" while we waited for him to take his turn. Forever the prankster, he loved to laugh and often had a mischievous smile on his face as he watched the reactions of the unsuspecting.

Gene earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education, a red seal journeyman in carpentry and a journeyman in cabinetmaking, which he instructed at the college and high school. He appreciated hearing of his students' successes and the gratitude of those who benefited from his expertise and pride of craftsmanship. He was an excellent cook and carried on his Ukrainian heritage by passing on his technique for the perfect cabbage rolls and pedaheh to everyone who wanted to learn.

Gene dedicated countless hours volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, several church projects, coaching and held positions on sports boards of directors. His legacy lives on through the lives of people he helped and in the hearts of his family and many friends.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 - 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. Following the Mass, Gene will be laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery.
