Send a Tribute

Dr. Al was a devoted husband to Barbara since their marriage in 1964.

Dr. Al was a devoted husband to Barbara since their marriage in 1964.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Billett, their three kids – Debra (Les) Billett Greeno, James (Stephanie) Billett, and Lori (Colin) Billett Zieber. He was loved and felt close to all of his grandchildren – Michael (Emily) Greeno, Rylan (Kimberly) Greeno, Kailyn (Tyler) Wong, Rachel Greeno, Daniel Billett, Stormi Billett, Solara Billett, Laurel Zieber (Kahl Stickel), Annika Zieber (Evan Hansen), Johanna Zieber and Bennett Zieber. Much joy was brought to him by his great grandkids – JJ, Nash & Ellie Greeno, Amber, Mataya & Sadie Greeno, Montana & Memphis Wong.

Dr. Al is also survived by his brothers and sister, Larry, Karen & John Billett (Danielle Goulet) and Barb’s siblings – Winston (Janet) South, Duncan (Maxine) South, Betty (Murray) Green & Marjorie (Glenn) Heisler. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his dad and mom, Thomas & Esther Billett - his sister-in-law, Vi Billett – and his father-in-law and mother-in law, Gordon and Mary South.

Dr. Al was born on October 8, 1941 in Eston, Saskatchewan to Tom and Esther Billett. He won awards for his clarinet musical performances and was able to help pay for his medical school by playing in dance bands. He was in his internship when he went on his first date with Barb, a registered nurse. They went to a movie, but he was so tired that he fell asleep in the middle of it. With a chuckle, he commented, “But she married me anyway.”

Barb and Alan moved to La Ronge, Saskatchewan with their young family to start Alan’s medical practice. Dr. Al’s motivation was to provide quality medical care to the Indigenous People surrounding that area. Bush pilots often flew him in to “fly in only” areas to assist in whatever way he was needed. Due to flying in terrifying conditions with these pilots, he became a pilot himself just in case he ever needed to take over the controls. Dr. Al continued to fly into his 70’s.

After 7 years, Alan, Barbara & their 3 kids moved to Lethbridge. Dr. Al spent the rest of his career working at Bigelow Fowler Clinic South. He truly cared for his colleagues and patients over the many years at Bigelow Fowler Clinic South. He was a mentor, father figure and friend to so many. He was 72 years old when he retired.

Dr. Al loved his family and made it his mission to instill in them a love of music and a solid sense of rhythm. Dr. Al also made it a priority to teach his kids to appreciate humour and laughter. With syncopated rhythms and offbeat humour, the Billett home was filled with laughter and music.

Above all else, Dr. Al demonstrated the love of Jesus to everyone around him. He was kind and gracious, not easily offended and he loved people.

We believe Dr. Al is now in heaven – visiting and joking with those who have gone before him, joining in the highest quality big band, and giving hugs to those whom we miss so much.

Special thanks to LeAnn Esau, Isabel Crown and all of his incredible caregivers who helped to keep him in his own home until the end.

A private Family Service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation or the Lethbridge Pregnancy Care Centre.

Arrangements to be made by Cornerstone Funeral Home.

Our sincere condolences to your family. Dr Billett was my doctor since I moved to Lethbridge in 1975 shortly around the same time you came as well. He was a caring and thorough doctor and very easy to talk to. He looked after me and my family (and later my children). We very much appreciated him and were sorry to see him retire. Over that many years of visits we got to know each other and it was very obvious that his family was his pride and joy. Be grateful of all the great memories you have together.

Very sorry to learn of Dr Al's passing and my sincere condolences to you Barb and your family . Our paths crossed many times at church and our aqua exercise times at the Fritz Sick pool . Al was always so friendly , as you also Barb . Such a great sense of wit and humor he displayed and shared . Al's love of God always stood out and his pearls of wisdom and insight I always welcomed . When I think of Al it's always with that warmth and the kindness he oozed that came so naturally to him . May God fill you and keep you in HIS presence till that day you will be reunited with Al in Heaven . My sympathy to you all in your grief and sorrow .

I was One of Dr. Billetts first patients when he came to Lethbridge and I remained so until his retirement. He was such a kind and gracious man. I also knew him in other capacities.

With our deepest condolences to the Billett family of your loss. Dr. Billett was an exceptional family physician who has given our family wonderful care over many years until his retirement. I recall a time when he actually made a house visit to inform us of some upsetting health news. That was compassion! He was very supportive to our family. He truly was a committed, extraordinary person. Rest in peace Dr. Billett. Bea, Rob Niven and family

Dr. Alan Billett was my physician for many years at the Bigelow Fowler Clinic, Lethbridge. I will always remember the excellent care he provided during my time as his patient. He will always be deeply missed. Danica Brown, Lethbridge.

Danica Brown, December 2, 2025

Our deepest condolences to all of the Billett families; you surely will miss him but may his kindness live on through you and yours. We remember Dr. Billett as a colleague and as physician to our family. As a colleague, Al was always a positive presence to his patients, he lived by his abiding faith; was always a gentleman. As a family physician, we trusted in his advise and felt supported by him.. medical families are not always easy to have as patients! We never experienced all of his musicality but often heard his joyful humming as he entered the appointment room, while charting and as he left with a spring in his step. May he rest in peace .

Kent and Jan Hein, December 1, 2025

Sincere condolences to Barb, Debra, Lori , James, and extended family. What a privilege it has been to know and learn from Al over the years ... a true gentleman with diverse interests. When I came to Lethbridge to join the BFC in 1985 as a young physician I soon came to know Al as not only a superbly competent family physician, from whom I could (and would) learn a great deal by just watching his example, but someone who set the standard for how to also be a fine and caring person. Fond memories include: my being introduced by Al to others as "one of Lethbridge's better slushpump players", performing musically with Al (I have no doubt that he could have had success as a professional musician), watching his gentle but keen sense of humour in action (probably could have survived as a stand-up comic), discussing his technical expertise (ranging from public address systems and small electronics to antique telephones to keeping his ancient Toyota Tercel wagon roadworthy), receiving his guidance re best second hand stores to visit while attending medical conferences in Vancouver, and seeing his love for family and unwavering faith in action. Thanks Al

I am so sorry to read of the passing of Dr. Billett. I had the distinct privilege of being his Nurse from 2004-2013 at Bigelow Fowler South. He was kind, compassionate and endlessly patient with me, and with his patients. He cared deeply for his patients, and was Dr. to many generations; he was very good with children and with the elderly. He had a great sense of humor, every day, and was so easy to work with. We enjoyed talking about how things used to be done - in the '70's- SMA 12's, glass syringes and home visits. I looked forward to working everyday with him and will always remember the care and many kindness's he showed me, may you Rest in Peace Dr. Billett. Our Condolences to Barbara, Deb, Lori and James and families in the loss of your beloved Husband, Father, Grand-Father and Great Grand-Father.

Dr. Billett was my Dad's (Mac Russell) doctor. Dad liked going to him. One of his staff said to me- and I don't remember if this came from Dr. Billett- any day's a good day if Mac Russell is on the list. He was very good to Dad and gave Dad respect. Dad was an active man until his mid-90s. Dr. Billett even renewed his driver's licence when Dad turned 96. Soon after that, Dad became quite ill and had to visit his doctor frequently. At one point, we had concerns and asked if we, local members of the family, could make an appointment to discuss Dad's problems. He happily saw us. I'll never forget the way he treated us that day and his subsequent treatment of Dad, who hadn't been forthcoming with the information himself. You must miss him terribly. My sympathies to all of you. May you be blessed.

My husband, 2 yr. old daughter, and I arrived in Lethbridge in 1978. I was 7 mos. pregnant at the time and received excellent advice from some in the community who recommended Dr. Billett as a great family doctor. We had the good fortune to be "doctored" by him until his retirement. He was always there for us. He knew we were originally from Saskatchewan and loved to tell us about the trips he flew himself there. My condolences to the family. He will most certainly be missed but not forgotten.
