In September 1940, under the threat of Nazi bombings, Doreen and her sister Margaret, were two of the 800,000 children evacuated from Britain. The sisters landed in Kelliher, Saskatchewan, where they remained until they could return to Greenock in 1945.
On October 1, 1955, Doreen returned alone to Canada, settling in Regina. She met her first husband, Sigmund, there and they married in September 1956. They had one daughter, Carolyn. Sigmund passed away on December 17, 1977.
A rekindled friendship with DeWayne Ford, a widowed farmer from Coutts, AB, led to marriage on June 7, 1980. After being a secretary for many years, learning farm life was a challenge. However, the view of the Sweet Grass Hills made it worthwhile.
Doreen was welcomed into the family and community, making many lifelong friends. Their home on the farm was often a gathering place for many family events, or just friends stopping by for that little nip of scotch.
Doreen and DeWayne also enjoyed travelling, visiting numerous places. One of her favourites was Cuba. They didn’t hesitate to go anywhere.
After DeWayne’s passing on January 1, 2009, Doreen remained on the farm for a few years, before moving into Prairie Rose Lodge in Milk River. Doreen became a resident of Long Term in Milk River, when her health declined.
Doreen is survived by her sister Joy in Scotland, daughter Carolyn (Bruno) Scrigner, Isabella (Wyatt), Juliana (Lane) – Kylen, Raven and Levi, and DeWayne’s family, Ross (Jackie) Ford – Katie (Eric) Scarlet and Langston; Bob (Rosalee) Ford – Ben, Beth (Riley); Russ (Josie) Ford – Stefan (Jamesina), Celeste (Mike); Donna Ford; Ron (Chris) Ford – Cody (Jenny), Chase and Addison, Brady (Brittany), River and Everett, Karen, Bailey and Reef.
A Memorial Service will be held at ST. PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH, 209 – 2 Avenue NE, Milk River, AB, on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Shane Goldie officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Milk River Health Centre – Long Term, Box 90, 517 Centre Ave E, Milk River, AB, T0K 1M0.
