DEREK HANSON passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 18, 2020 in Coaldale Health Centre.
He was born February 24, 1928 in Yorkshire, England, the oldest of four children. He became a radiographer in 1946 and worked in X-ray in Menston Hospital where he met the love of his life, Noreen Armitage. They shared a wonderful love and marriage for over 71 years.
Derek immigrated with his wife and three children to Canada in 1966 and worked at the University Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. He moved to Red Deer the following year and spent the next 14 years as the Director & Tutor of the X-ray Department at Red Deer Regional Hospital. In 1981, Derek moved to Lethbridge where he finished out his career as Manager of X-ray at St. Michael's Hospital. After his retirement in 1993, Derek and Noreen lived in Spruce Grove, Prince Rupert, and Campbell River before returning to Lethbridge in 1998. Derek loved his career in X-ray and was known for his tall stature, keen intelligence and dry sense of humour. He was an avid curler and golfer and enjoyed photography. Derek was such a gentleman and was so kind and compassionate. He treated others equally, with respect and without judgement, setting a high standard and good example for his children.
He leaves behind his loving wife Noreen, son Nigel Hanson (Gerry), devoted daughters Wendy Nero (Jerry) and Andrea Wallace (Randy). He also leaves grandchildren Sean Hanson, Brett Hanson, Brittany Bastian, Noelle Hughes-Meier, Megan Johnston, and Russell Wallace, along with six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He was predeceased by his parents, infant sister June, younger sister Cynthia, and little brother Malcolm.
Derek was a remarkable man with a kind heart, quick wit and strong love for his wife and family. He will be missed but remembered always in our hearts.
Special thanks to Dr. Mueller, and the wonderful staff at the Coaldale Health Centre. The family will be forever grateful for the kindness and caring shown to Derek, and for the love that was shown to both him and the rest of the family with daily phone calls, garden visits and finally in person visits during the past five months. Thank you for being his family when visitors weren't allowed to be there.

Dear Andrea, So sorry to hear of the passing of your father. I have fond memories of him back when we used to pal around together as youngsters. May he rest is peace and may you and your family find comfort knowing he is remembered fondly.
I am so sorry to read of Derek's passing. He was always very kind to me when I was young, and I have VERY fond memories of both Derek and Noreen. I pass on my best wishes and love to Noreen, Andrea , and the rest of the family.
Derek helped me a lot when i started in x ray .at that time i was a porter just for x ray.we also did the filing and what ever else had to be done.I was on the late shift every day and had to book the patients in for tests.I was not very brave about doing this and a little scared,But Derek had faith in me and said that i could do it.He stayed late with me for a week until i felt ok.I am so thankful to him.I stayed in x ray for 20 years.R.i.p. Derek and thank you.
Please accept our sincere condolences following Derek's passing. I well remember his quick wit and wry humour. Many years ago you hosted us in your home for a young adults group event and I was always appreciative of your willingness to brave such an occasion! Keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers. Marcella
My deepest sympathy to you and the family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Fond memories of Derek always being jovial and joking, as well as warm and friendly.
Noreen and family Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of Derek. I was director of pharmacy and worked with Derek at St. Michael's for many years. I lost track of Derek after he retired and did not know that you were back in Lethbridge. I truly enjoyed working with Derek at the hospital, on the golf course, curling and a few card evenings. Great colleague to be with and made for a great environment at work. May he rest in peace knowing he was respected and appreciated while at St. Michael's.
I was sorry to read of Derek's passing. I always enjoyed visiting with him and you also Noreen. We miss him at Somerset apartments and seeing him taking pictures. My condolences to your family.
