Hoffarth, Ethel Alene

Send a Tribute

ETHEL "ALENE" HOFFARTH, beloved wife of Fred Hoffarth of almost 69 years, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the age of 87 years.

ETHEL "ALENE" HOFFARTH, beloved wife of Fred Hoffarth of almost 69 years, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the age of 87 years.

Besides her loving husband, Alene is survived by eight children: Colleen Gerla (Jim) of Lethbridge, Greg (Judy) of Picture Butte, Fred (Brenda) of Diamond City, Monty of Fort Macleod, Raymond (Ginny) of Lethbridge, Amelia Danielson (Kelly) of Lethbridge, Colette Brayley (Jamie) of Calgary and Annette of Lethbridge; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Sandra, half siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alene was predeceased by sons Michael (1955) and Richard (2017) and her brothers and sister.

Alene was born in Lethbridge on September 25, 1931. She was raised and schooled in Barnwell, and later attended school in Taber for two years. In 1949, she moved to Lethbridge to attend Beauty School and work as a hairdresser. She met Fred Hoffarth, the love of her life at the Paramount Coffee Shop. They were married in 1950 and had ten children, which included three sets of twins. Raising such a large family required the patience of a saint and the stamina of a drill Sergeant, yet she always found time for a hug. She loved to bake. Nobody made better cookies, pies and cakes than Mom. Every morning without fail, she would start her day by putting on her apron. She could knit and crochet, and she sewed all our clothes when we were young. There was nothing Mom couldn't do. In the 70's, Mom worked for the Lethbridge Labor Club as the Head Cook. When the kids were grown and Dad retired as an engineer for CPR, they opened their own restaurant in Osoyoos, B.C., and of course Mom was the cook. Eventually, Mom and Dad moved back to Lethbridge to retire. By that time, there were lots of grandchildren to occupy their time. Mom may have been small in stature but she was feisty and was fondly known as the "Comeback Queen". We will sadly miss her quick wit and dry sense of humour.

A Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, March 25, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Deacon Ray Wagner officiating.

Alene will be laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

I met Auntie Alene at family reunions and was always in awe of her spunkiness, sense of humour, fashionable beauty and lithe capabilities. Though I only remember meeting her maybe 3 times, she brought with her a kind and gentle spirit with each meeting. My Mom (Alyce Anger) only ever spoke highly of Alene. In fact, ALL of the siblings (full and half) only ever spoke of her with graciousness and love. On behalf of our family, our belated condolences and our gratitude that God blessed this world with her presence for as long as He did

I have had the pleasure of knowing your mother in work related matters at the Credit Union. She was a treasure here among the staff. I loved her sense of humour and her interaction with your father. There was no one like her and I know you have blessed by her influence in your lives. My condolences. Wonderful lady and legacy.
