He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Patricia Hastings, of Yakima, Washington.

He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Patricia Hastings, of Yakima, Washington.

He is survived by his loving faithful wife and best friend, Gwendolyn Kay Hastings, of 54 years; six children and their spouses: Jeff (Tania) Hastings (Granbury, TX), Jason (Rebecca) Hastings (Lethbridge, AB), Tim (Erica) Hastings (Edmonton, AB), Kalen (Naomi) Hastings (Coaldale, AB), Kara (Ben) Indenbosch (Kalispell, MT) and Kendon (Mackenzie) Hastings (Coaldale, AB); 19 grandchildren, and one great grandchild; his younger sister Linda Calvert (Michael Stefanchick) (Vancouver, WA), and his older brother Terry Hastings (Mattawa, WA).

Michael taught at Lethbridge College from 1974 until his retirement from full-time teaching in 2007 to dedicate more time to ministry. An avid fisherman and “fisher of men,” Mike touched the lives of many through his gregarious personality, trademark high fives, adventurous spirit and heart of compassion. He loved self-sacrificially and ordered his steps with future good in mind. You were an amazing husband, father and grandfather who made a profound impact on our lives. You fought the good fight, kept the faith and finished the race. Though you will be greatly missed, your legacy will live on through your children and grandchildren and the lives of those you touched. To the trailblazer who ran with endurance, we say: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’

A Celebration of Mike’s life will be held at PARK MEADOWS BAPTIST CHURCH, 2011 15 Avenue North, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 2:00 PM.

Mike was my last college instructor & inspired me to embark on my own tree care service in Lethbridge. Always kind & supportive. I was a single dad of 4 and at 35 his oldest student at the time. We talked about taking his boat & my son to his favorite fishing spot in the summer of 2025. He was still gardening & building his new driveway planting. Just the most incredible man I ever met. Rest well teach, always in my heart. Thank you so very much Mr. Hastings.

This is so heartbreaking. Mike was by far the best instructor I have ever had. He truly cared about his students on a personal level, I am so thankful I had the opportunity to know him.

I was privileged to know Mike ( and Gwen) while his children attended Sunnyside School. He was a very dedicated parent and community minded man. His dear family will certainly miss him. Sending sympathy and prayers to the whole family.

Gwen and Family - Please accept my condolences on Mike's passing. When I joined what was then Lethbridge Community College, I had the good fortune to be assigned as Mike's office mate, or as Mike would refer to me, his latest "roomie." I have always said that Mike was the best office mate a new instructor could have. I learned a lot about being an instructor from Mike, and I still miss his usual greeting of "Hey, Double A" (a greeting which continued whenever I saw him even after his retirement). "Dr. Mike" as his students affectionately called him, had a positive impact on the lives of many people, both in his time as a teacher, and in his so-called "retirement" years.

I was so blessed to have Mike as one of my professors during college in the late 90's. His support and kindness were always present, which quickly made him my favorite. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who loved him, which I am sure is quite a few!
