Our mother, FRANCES MOORE MALACKO (Nee Ferguson), passed away on Tuesday, August 24th, 2021, just three days short of her 98th birthday.
She was born in Fernie, BC on August 27, 1923 and was the eldest granddaughter of the Ferguson and Townsend families who immigrated in 1910 from Cumbria and Lancashire, England to Fernie and Coal Creek to work in the coal mines. Her family lived in Fernie until WWII and then she moved to Nelson to attend business school. Frances worked for a securities firm and thus began her hobby of dabbling in the stock market.
Mom married our father, Ernest "Ernie" Malacko, a Lethbridge native son in 1947 and they built a new home at 524 Dieppe Blvd where they lived for the next 60 years. It was the best neighbourhood to call home and many life-long friendships still flourish. They raised five children: Marilyn, Penny, Stuart, Brian and Murray and cherished eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Mom was a "stay at home mom" and was always there for her family. Her pastry was #1 and her grandpa thought it was better than her grandma's, a compliment she treasured. She also made Yorkshire puddings that were the highest and crispiest. Mom was a master knitter and seamstress and our family all benefited from her creations over the years. She shared her love of the East Kootenays with all her family and the Tie Lake cabin was a retreat for everyone.
Mom had been a resident of St. Therese Villa since dad's passing in 2013 and the family wishes to thank all the staff there for their friendship and the loving care our dear mother received.
At mom's request, there will be no formal funeral service. She will be laid to rest with our dad in Mountain View Cemetery.
