Send a Tribute

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and Nokum, Margaret Rose Fletcher (née Wuttunee), who passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and Nokum, Margaret Rose Fletcher (née Wuttunee), who passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Margaret passed away after a brief illness and was two months shy of her 91st birthday on February 26th. True to who she was, she waited until all her children had arrived. Surrounded by their love, she passed peacefully just over two hours later, exactly as she wished—together with her family.

Margaret was born on the Red Pheasant Cree Nation Reserve in Saskatchewan to her parents, James and Priscella Jane (nee Clarke) Wuttunee. She was deeply proud of her Cree heritage and carried that pride throughout her life, sharing her culture, values, and strength with her family and community.

In 1955, Margaret married, Thomas Ewan “Ian” Fletcher, in Battleford, Saskatchewan. Together, they raised their five children, making homes in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Rosetown, Calgary, Kelowna, British Columbia and after dad’s passing, Lethbridge became her home.

Margaret had a profound and lasting impact on the Indigenous community in Kelowna. She was an active and dedicated member of the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society for many years, where her kindness, wisdom, and advocacy touched many lives. In recognition of her contributions and lasting legacy, an Indigenous housing development, on the property purchased from mom & dad, in Kelowna has been named Margaret’s Landing in her honour—something she was deeply honoured and proud of.

Margaret was the youngest of thirteen children and cherished her role as an auntie to her many nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Thomas Ewan “Ian” Fletcher, her son Gregory Keith Fletcher, her parents James and Priscella Jane (Clarke) Wuttunee, her siblings Violet, Lillian, Herman, Maria, Gavin, Gladys, Noel, Bill, Adam, Florence, and Tom and nieces and nephews.

Margaret will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her children: Debra Fletcher, Derek Fletcher, Peggy Fletcher (Len Buttazzoni), and Karen Fletcher; her grandchildren: Tamara (Ryan) Palmer, Chelsey Wyght, Haydn Stringer, Valena-Rose (Shawn) Bevans, Justin (Jessica) Stringer, Clay (Francis) Wyght, and Cheyenne (Alex George) Fontaine; her great-grandchildren: Brock, Duke, Lilah, and Piper Bevans, and Kash and Shae Palmer and her nieces and nephews.

Margaret’s legacy of love, resilience, and pride in her family and culture will live on through all who knew her. She will be forever loved, deeply missed, and always remembered.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at GSS West Highlands for their care, compassion, and support. We would also like to thank the Cornerstone Funeral Home, in particular Doug, for his dedication in providing exceptional support.

There will be a Celebration of Life held on Thursday, January 8th, 1:00 pm at the LDS Church 2213 6a Ave N, Lethbridge, AB. Interment will be held at a later date on Red Pheasant Cree Nation.
