Send a Tribute

JOHN DOUGLAS "DOUG" OBER, the beloved husband of Shirley Ober, passed away suddenly at his farm on Friday, November 16th, 2018, at the age of 78 years.

JOHN DOUGLAS "DOUG" OBER, the beloved husband of Shirley Ober, passed away suddenly at his farm on Friday, November 16th, 2018, at the age of 78 years.

Besides his loving wife Shirley, he is survived by three sons, Kevin of Lethbridge, Craig of Calgary and Neal (Rochelle) of Monarch; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister, Faye Ward of Lethbridge.

Doug was predeceased by his parents, Ben and Lela Ober, one brother, Bob Ober, one sister-in-law June Ober, one brother-in-law Don Ward.

Doug & Shirley were married March 21st, 1959.  He was a farmer for over 60 years, working hard like a farmer needs to do.  Besides farming, he loved to travel and enjoyed travelling to Arizona, Palm Springs, as well as spending time at their other home in Whitefish, MT.  His pride and joy were his grandchildren.  Doug loved having Christmas festivities at the family farm, skiing, golf and the Calgary Flames. He spent many years on the Canadian Ski Patrol, Coaldale Kinsmen Club, and was a board member of the Ptarmigan Village.

Doug was well loved for his humour, respect and generous spirit.  He definitely had a unique sense of humour and a quick wit. His quiet courage, the strength of spirit and creativity will be carried forward by those who know and loved him.  He will be truly missed by everyone.

An informal Come and Go Reception will be held at the SANDMAN HOTEL, Alberta Room, 421 - Mayor Magrath Drive, South, Lethbridge, on Friday, November 23rd, from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

In memory of Doug, contributions may be made to the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation, 2124 - 16th Avenue, Coaldale, Alta. T1M 1J8

Text…Many good memories

Nan Hartley Rueger, November 21, 2018

I remember first meeting Doug and you Shirley, in 1966 at a harvest celebration near Coaldale, Alberta. The crops were off the fields, the Perry brothers had a new quonset, and all the neighbours from the area were invited. It seemed that every farming family around had put on their best blue jeans, shined their shoes and were prepared to have some fun. The quonset smelled of newly baled hay which people sat on while they enjoyed a beer, great food and visiting with those that they knew but didn’t have time to talk with during the busy growing season. My husband Lyle and I had driven out from Lethbridge and though we knew the Perry family, we didn’t know any of the neighbours who were mostly farmers and ranchers. We soon found out that the Obers were quintessential southern Alberta farmers and Doug was a great representative for all that meant: hard working, dependable, and down to earth. Who else would have a picture of a tractor instead of himself on his e-mail? In that entire crowd that beautiful October evening, we were drawn to Doug; probably because of his pleasant smile and unassuming nature. Before we knew it, we were chatting like we had known him for ages. Some 30 years later when we bought a small property in Ptarmigan Village, Whitefish, Montana, we found out that Doug was on the Board of Directors there. In fact, he has been on the Board for so many years that none of us in the Village could imagine him not serving in some capacity or other. If there isn’t a chair with a gold plate and the name Doug Ober engraved on it in the office/board room, then he has taken it with him. We will miss Doug with his wry humour and his laid back approach to things. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you Shirley and to the family. Barbara Davis and family
