Richard was born in Moose Jaw, SK and attended school on three army bases as his father was in the Canadian Air Force. One of his hobbies was weightlifting which he became very good at.

Richard will be remembered as a kind and generous person. He cherished his time spent with family and friends and will be deeply missed.

The one thing you could always depend on from Rich was being greeted with a great big smile. He was funny, talented and had great influence on those around him. All the best to the Oler family during this time.

We were saddened to learn of Rich's passing...we knew Rich thru his work with the band, Suite 33, and whenever they would come to town, Rich would come over and chat with us before, during, and after the show, always taking time to make us feel 'at home'...loved to watch him on stage, pounding his drums, big smile on his face, enjoying each and every show we had the pleasure to see him perform....our sympathies to his family and friends on your loss... Keith & Gary Kinloch Edmonton.

Rich was a dear friend and mentor to me. We were drumming comrades and always hungry to find new music and challenges. He inspired me to play with no limits and to be confident in my approach and be myself. He devoured complex music and made it look easy. He blew me away with his talents and yet he was such a sweet and humble guy. He was one of my all-time favorite drummers. I shall miss him immensely. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. RIP Rich.

There is such heaviness and sadness in my heart as I say goodbye to my dear friend. We shared so many great moments and adventures together from being on the road together in Jynx as well as all the times hanging out, talking (philosophizing), camping, and just being who we were, as well as you being my Best Man when I got married. You taught and showed me many things and these memories bring a smile to my face as I recall them; -Anything you do in life is better barefoot, especially drumming. -Sleeping in, is part of being a musician -Turn the knots toward you when chopping wood -Tomato soup (made with milk) is perfect with liverwurst on toast -Ketchup fixes most culinary errors, especially if it involves hamburger, beans and hash-browns -Before you turn the car radio on, cross your fingers and say RUSH - Always help someone in need and be kind Rich ..... You were, and will always be an inspiration and I miss you so very much. To the Olers, my heart goes out to you all as we will all miss Rich tremendously.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. We had the good fortune to know Rich through Suite 33 and he joined us for BBQ's with Doug and Nicole. Something cooking on the grill was always on the menu, much to Rich's delight. He was a talented musician and a kind and gentle man who we will miss dearly. Take comfort knowing that he touched a lot of lives in wonderful ways.

Sylvia, so sorry to hear of the loss of your son.

Mary Gockij, January 5, 2018

Richard changed my life. He turned fantasy of being a musician into reality. When I first heard Rich play, a peer, from Cold Lake, I had to ask myself why am I not as good as him? Rich was an amazing musician, and made me a better one. When we formed our first band, Rich didn't know limitations so neither did we. We played songs that were so beyond what any kids should be able tp play, simply because he could. He was a kind person, a fearless friend, and someone I will dearly miss.

Stephen Snider, January 4, 2018
