Trautman, Allen "Al"

Sorry to discover this 3 yrs after the fact! Never "Dr" Trautman to me....just "Traut" at CLC. Spent many hours on Devon Island together as he took over from me as the assistant birdman. And duck hunting around New Norway. But our paths diverged. Good memories. Lindsay Rackette

I trained under him for a few months and really enjoyed and respected him. He could do anything and make it look easy. A caring doctor, a generous teacher and mentor. Also some of my favourite memories of doing call as a resident as once he knew I could ride I got to help move cattle when we were on weekends together. His loss will be felt widely.

Dear Geri, Victoria, and Mike, We were so sorry and shocked to read of the passing of your loved husband and father, Dr. Allen Trautman. We have nothing but fond memories and admiration for him for all the care he provided for so many and for his kind, generous, and friendly spirit. I remember joining Allen in Ottawa to examine the candidates for general surgical fellowships. We were all dressed in "suit and tie" and Al had a tee shirt with a horse on the front. He was the toughest (and best) examiner I have ever worked with.

To the Trautman family; my condolences on Al's passing. I worked with Al in the operating room. He was a unique individual, coming into the change room as a farmer, complete with boots, and walking through the OR doors as a surgeon. He was simply put one of the best surgeons I had the pleasure of working with. It was also a personal delight to work with him. He will be missed in Lethbridge medical community.

My deepest condolences for your loss. I was a two time surgery patient of Dr. Trautman's more than 35 years ago and I still tell people about how great a person and surgeon he was. I've never liked hospitals or doctors and during prep for my very first surgery ever in walk a guy with jeans, western shirt, boots and a buckle. Maybe a bit of a mullet too. A sight that didn't exactly alleviate my concerns. I remember thinking "where'd he park his horse?" He quietly and confidently explained the procedure, told me he'd have me out of there in no time at all and then left. He did exactly that. He was kind and caring. They say the true measure of a man is those that remember them on their passing. Everyone I know remembers your husband, father and grandfather, most after having met him only once. That is a tall measure.

My deepest condolences. Dr. Trautman was my surgeon so, so, so many years ago, and has been part of my care system since. I've loved his passion, his education, his compassion and his ability to be a friend to all he knew.

Sincere thoughts and condolences

Dear Geri,Victoria,Michael and family, We spent many hours with Dr T in our Outpatient Department. He was a valued colleague and friend. He was always calm and kind and made his patients feel cared for and special. He never failed to give a "Thanks Team!" when leaving for the day. We think of him often and will miss him greatly! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. The Chinook Hospital Outpatient Department.

Our deepest sympathy Geri, Victoria & Michael and family. We had some great times together, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation ...apron modelling. Always up for a little fun for a good cause!! I recall Al with his nose in a medical journal on the return trip from Europe with the Bonecrushers; dedication and constant learning!! A late night call and a quickly arranged gallbladder surgery of a family member who to this day praises the "cowboy Doc". A quick smile, a chuckle and a ready laugh. It's the little things...you never forget!! We are so sad that Al "fixed up" so many with his medical expertise and then had his own life cut short. Hugs

Great doctor, awesome friend

Heartfelt condolences to the Trautman family. We had the honor of knowing Al on many different levels, from medical surgeries, to his outdoor passions. We will hold his memory in the highest esteem and treasure every conversation we shared.

Although I was not able to be there in person as I would have preferred, I did tune in to prayers and the funeral from my place in Vancouver. The prayers had such wonderful music selected (especially "Church of the Long Grass") and Victoria did a great job on the Eulogy. Even seeing my family on the screen and hearing their voices brought some comfort and it was nice to join in prayer, even connected through a computer screen. Today's funeral was also beautiful, I thought the priest did a good job on the sermon with some great stories of Uncle Al. Missing you all, and so very sorry for your loss. I can't help but get a bit of comfort when I think of Uncle Al sitting with Grandma, Grandpa and Dave up in heaven. I bet they are sitting down to a good meal together and sharing a lot of stories.

Just finished watching the funeral and want to send you my sincere sympathy to Geri and the family. I will never forget his friendship with Bob, Lindy and Len. We as a family will never forget the many times he helped us. So sorry ____ Marie

Geri and Family Shock and sadness upon learning of Al's passing. Can't remember a time when, upon meeting/seeing Alan, he didn't greet with a smile and have something positive to say. We are so sad to hear of Al's passing. It was an honor and pleasure to know him both personally and professionally. I remember when he arrived to Lethbridge as a new surgeon - it didn't take long for his patients and colleagues to understand and appreciate what a talented and kind person he was. It has be many years since last seeing AL as we each went our own way after 12 years of being classmates, teammates in Hockey and Baseball, hunting partners, friends and sometime trouble makers. We did reconnect about a year ago during making plans for our 50 year high school reunion, which didn't happen due to the Covid shut down. We did have a great long phone call and it was as if the passing 50 years had never happened and we just picked up such an easy conversation and ended with looking forward to getting together soon and meeting each others families at the reunion. When we meet AL will be remembered with many stores and great admiration. So it is with great sadness that we must pass on our heartfelt Condolences to Geri, Victoria and Mike and all the rest of the Trautman clan.

Al was an amazing colleague and role model. He took on some of the most difficult cases in the hospital, he was not afraid of hard work, and he was the best of teammates. Somehow, he maintained that persona as a cowboy, while holding one of the most demanding and stressful jobs a person can have. I'll never forget him.
