She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leigh Willoughby (2019), with whom she shared a marriage of love and companionship; as well as her parents, Thomas and Icele Craig, who instilled in her the values of hard work and perseverance.
Born on April 24, 1938, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Verna’s life was defined by devotion, resilience, and an unwavering sense of independence. She spent her career as a teacher of Grade 1, nurturing countless young minds. To her, every child held promise, and she never tired of guiding them through their very first steps into learning.
Verna’s home was always filled with life, whether through the aroma of something baking in the oven, the presence of her cats curling at her feet, or the laughter of grandchildren eagerly waiting to taste her latest recipe. She developed thousands of dishes over the years – some traditional, others wonderfully unique – each one a reflection of her creativity and her deep care for those she loved most. Her kitchen was her canvas, and her grandchildren were often the delighted critics.
She also cherished her quiet moments with a good book, often losing herself in the thrilling pages of legal thriller novels. Yet, just as much as she valued solitude, she thrived in community. Her circle of close friends was a source of connection and companionship, and Verna loved to visit, laugh, and share stories over a cup of tea.
Fiercely independent, she lived in her own home right up until her passing, tending to her garden this year as she had done for several before, especially following Leigh’s passing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta at www.heartandstroke.ca.
As per Verna’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. In memory of Verna, her family asks that you take a moment to do a random act of kindness for someone – perhaps a friend, a neighbour, or someone you love.

Dear Sheryl, Ward, and Family, It has been my privilege to work alongside with Verna at Nicholas Sheran School. I recall her as a compassionate teacher to her students, and a loving and supportive colleague to her staff. Verna enthusiastically shared her wisdom, knowledge, and creativity with her fellow teachers and support team. She always had twinkles in her eyes whenever she spoke about her family (especially her grandchildren). I remember her smiles, laughter, and energy dedicated towards any project or task she was completing whether at home or at school. Verna's spirit has imprinted warm memories in my heart.
Thank you, Verna. You were a wonderful colleague and you gave my daughter Anna an incredible grade one experience. The positive influence you had on so many young children’s learning will be a lasting and remarkable legacy for a great human and educator. RIP and rise in glory. Much love to the family she adored.
It was truly my honour to work with Verna as a teacher. What a beautiful, caring, joyous guide she was to both children and colleagues. Verna's life, our most precious gift!
