MARIA TERESA ZAPPONE passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital at the age of 58 after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her mother, Esterina Zappone; her sister, Filomena (David) Dowell, and her brother, Francesco (Tracy) Zappone, of Lethbridge. She is also survived by her nephews, Robert Dowell, Giuseppe Zappone, Marco Zappone, and Andrew (Brooke) Dowell, as well as her dog, Ted. She was predeceased by her father, Giuseppe, and her sister, Mirella.

Maria grew up in Lethbridge and attended the University of Lethbridge, the University of Alberta, and the University of Perugia in Italy. She was a dedicated teacher and amazing friend whose joy was the company of those around her. Her career took her to Taber, Medicine Hat, and most recently St. Francis Junior High School in Lethbridge, where she taught until early this year.
Maria was a passionate supporter of the arts and an advocate for social justice. She was a constant traveler, visiting many places throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle East. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
A Prayer Service will be held at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH - 2405 - 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Cliff Bogdan officiating.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Kevin Tumback celebrating. Interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

The Hegedes extend our deepest sympathy's to the Zappone families for the loss of their daughter and sister. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
We are very saddened to learn of Maria's passing. She was on staff with me at St Mary's Taber in the 80's. Her and my daughter wrote a special ' Lamb of God' rendition for the Grad Mass that year. I think of Maria especially each time I hear it. Maria was loved by her students and staff in Taber. We were always excited to spend time socializing with her. Lots of fun times and memories.
I am very sorry for your loss, Ms. Zappone was my grade 7 home room teacher and hearing this new brought sadness to my heart. She had a big influenced on my life and looking back I learned a lot from her. She taught me to care about others and how important it was to focus on school. Most importantly though, she saw the potential in me. She pushed me to be the best that I could, and I am forever grateful for that. Thank you Ms. Zappone, may you rest in peace.

Dear Family, Deepest sympathies. I worked with Maria for many years at SFJH and was deeply saddened to hear this news. She made an impact on the lives of both students and staff.
Dear Zappone Family, Ms Zappone was my teacher from 2002-2004 as my French teacher. She was one of my favourite teachers and was hugely influential to my love of French. Her feisty, dynamic and upbeat nature made learning so enjoyable! I have so many dear memories of Ms Zappone and I am truly saddened to hear of her passing at a time which was far too soon. To Maria's family... the world will not shine as bright with Maria's passing. I taught numerous years with her at SFJH. She will be missed by so many. She taught all 3 of my children too.
